MASERU- BASOTHO National Party (BNP) secretary general (SG) Tšepo Lethobane has been suspended from the party for a period of two years effectively from 20 October, 2021, on allegations of embezzling party funds.
According to him he does not consider this as a suspension but instead an expulsion.
“I received my letter of suspension yesterday (Wednesday) and I have been told not to take part in the party’s activities during those two years. I don’t regard this as a suspension at all. It is a clear expulsion,” said Lethobane.
He said he is considering taking an appeal when the dust has settled and it is only then that he will consider speaking in depth to the media on how he feels about this decision taken by the national executive committee.
Lethobane said he was found guilty of using party funds amounting to M25, 150.00, “however the figure was inflated to M84, 000. 00”
BNP spokesperson ’Masetota Leshota confirmed Mr Lethobane’s suspension. “He was suspended on Wednesday for a period of two years over misappropriation of party funds which were paid by tenants through mobile money platforms. During his suspension he should not take part in the party’s activities.”
Mr Lethobane’s suspension was done on the recommendation of the party’s national executive committee (NEC) which had received reports from its sub-committee indicating that there were party funds that could not be accounted for.
