ABOUT THABA BOSIU
Thaba Bosiu is a fortress that was chosen by the founder of the Basotho, King Moshoeshoe, who trekked with his people from Menkhoaneng to settle there.
From the top of Thaba Bosiu Moshoeshoe defeated gun-wielding enemies including the Boers and the British by rolling rocks down at them.
It was named Thaba Bosiu (mountain of the night) because attacking forces often believed they could defeat Moshoeshoe when they did their surveillance during the day, but when they returned they couldn’t climb the mountain at night – so they spread rumours that the mountain grew at night.
